I've created this topic thread so that we can discuss actions going forward from a meeting of 24 CHC members in London. I've posted an abbreviated version of the actions planned. Please do post your comments/suggestions/actions here if you were at the meeting or if you would like to comment on it. (If you were at the meeting, you will have recieved the longer version by email.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Importance of making business directly related to health and climate change in turn. Three areas of influence-

  1. on the wards,
  2. institutions
  3. trusts, on a policy level

- Waste management, Clinical waste/ recycling and linking this with infection control. Get infection control staff to train front line staff.

- Compile the carbon footprint list of healthcare organisations, could have league tables- red, amber, green

- Specific actions that specialties can take. Produce 10:10 specialty factsheets / fill in the gaps.

- Work shop at the Royal College of GPs’ conference. People are welcome to feed in ideas - jienchino@googlemail.com JIENCHI

- Identify senior board champions to lead. Both on exec and non exec boards. Foundation trusts should find governors willing to take it forward. CHC could help to develop teams in trusts/unis who are working on sustainability in education and clinical environments

Importance of teaching medical students about issues of sustainability. Useful approach likely to be integrating across curriculum (therefore need to use contacts acrss teh trust, and teaching systems thinking.)

- 10 actions for students could go on website

- Students can work on projects to contribute to some of these areas of work, e.g. stickers for clinical waste and business plan for waste by SSC students in Leeds

- Students, SHE network and CHC may be able to work together to communicate with the dean and get sustainability more integrated in med curricula

Other actions

Pharmacy- huge proportions of procurement 60% of the overall 60% procurement share- How do we address the footprint of drugs? Alternative methods of treatment?

OLIVIA is working to clarify and communicate the roles of different organisations addressing health and sustainability. We can post this on the website when complete

I've contacted the Sustainable Healthcare Education network coordinators (SHE) to check whether we can add our project suggestions, and whether there could be a page abotu student projects on sustainability on their website.
