Being rewarded for making sustainable choices? Surely not…
Changing your lifestyle to adapt to climate change appears easy on the surface. Changing a few light bulbs, doing a bit of recycling, maybe even insulating your loft if you’re feeling adventurous. None of this is rocket science. Yet the majority of people I know still don’t regularly make even the easiest of sustainable choices.
How to bring about this kind of en masse behavioural change, and why it hasn’t already happened, is the subject of much debate. One of my personal favourite theories is that of the ‘do- gooders’. ‘Do –gooders’ are the people you know who cycle everywhere, recycle everything, never fly and always eat local. Very admirable, but many find this intimidating- requiring more change than they feel comfortable with- or too much effort, so they just rebel and decide they can’t be bothered.
New ways of communicating sustainable lifestyles are much needed. Which is why I was so pleased when I discovered a new website- www.myice.com- which gives reward points for making sustainable choices. Like nectar points, signing up is free and customers can claim back ‘ice’ on purchases from fashion, food, drink and travel. Many big name brands have already signed up including Eurostar and Green & Blacks so it doesn’t only appeal to a niche market, and Ice gives a description of each companies ‘environmental credentials’.
In order to assess the website properly, Myice kindly credited my account with enough ice to buy some delicious Green & Black’s chocolate. The website isn’t completely glitch free yet- some of the links need to be clicked on twice or refreshed in order to work- but the basic layout of the site is attractive and easy to use. Ice can also be used as a part payment for a purchase, which will give it an advantage over other reward schemes. It seemed a great way of feeling good about yourself and saving money.
